Summary

The major argument of this article is that mental disorders have the ability to change or distort social perception of individuals. According to Gray, Jenkins, Heberlein, and Wegner (2011), people with such illnesses have a lot of difficulties in understanding other persons, their goals, intentions, and perception, or may ultimately fail to note the mental states of others. Therefore, they are known to possess distorted mind perception, which not only has affects the sufferers of the condition and the community as a whole but also assist to understand the diagnosis, and the treatment psychopathology cases.

To strengthen their claims, Gray, Jenkins, Heberlein, and Wegner (2011) used three disorders to test the correlation between mental disorders and mind perception. Notably, Autism spectrum, schizotypy, and psychopathy disorders each encompass aberrations in social interactions; however, analyzing them terms of their ascriptions of experience and agency across an array of targets demonstrates that every one of them has an exclusive form of distorted mind perception. Therefore, it is important to not that the findings emerge from a self-report measure, and the correlations are comparatively modest, notwithstanding their statistical significance which is strong. According to this research, it is evidenced that the three selected disorders show the advantage of the transdiagnostic method where disorders have been regarded as a disturbance of cognitive system that results in wrong decision-making among people. Specifically, in psychopathy disorder, there were higher scores which were associated with reduced perception of experience and urgency to the typically ascribed experience. It shows the reason why the psychopaths harm other groups with no understanding of experience, and acquisition of moral right also disappears.

Critique

Gray, Jenkins, Heberlein, and Wegner have argued that the most causal factor of violence in the society is more related to the psychopathology than the genetic make-up of an individual. In most cases, abuse cases have been linked to their genes. However, the authors posit that most cases of violence are as a result of inability to determine ones mental state which has been attributed to the disorders that distort the mind perception. For example, psychopathy disorder is characterized by egotistical, persistent antisocial behavior, and disinhibited traits which will compel one to be too violent and cause disharmony in the society. Also, the article clearly states that those with distorted mind perception tend to be on their own and do not interact with others making them too wild.

One of the major arguments of the article is that distorted mind perception is a critical factor in diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. While the authors have apparently given examples of disorders that contribute to the distorted mind, they have not clearly demonstrated how it can be used to diagnose and treat them. In most cases, the major argument on the introduction of a research study is one of the critical avenues of knowing the context of the paper and makes one decides to read it or not. Treatment of these disorders is a fundamental factor that ought to have been clearly demonstrated in the research work. Moreover, the hypotheses of the paper have not been clearly described making it hard to understand the whole article.

Extensions

One of the greatest drawbacks of this study is the limited number of the participant that might give wrong correlation and ultimately bad results. Therefore, the number of sample study is one of the fundamental factors that I would add in this study. Additionally, it is of great importance to show the correlation of distorted mind perception and the probability of diagnosing and treating the disorders. While the hypothesis of article tends to investigate the connection between perception of mind and the three disorders that are associated with irregular social function, I would add how studying distorted mind perception would lead to the diagnosis and treatment of such disorders. Notably, the addition of such hypothesis would assist to investigate whether or not recalibrating mind perceptions also improves symptoms of the disorders.

Connections

Gray, Jenkins, Heberlein, and Wegner study can be connected to many concepts learned in class. First is the method of conducting research. In this particular part, the authors have demonstrated important steps of report writing such as introduction, formulation of the hypothesis, results, and discussion, which are very imperative in the process of learning. The content of the research is also tied to some of the theories that have been taught about psychological disorders. Just as learned earlier, these results advocate that the classification of psychopathology must concentrate not only on the minds of the victims but also on the manner in which their minds recognize those of others. Notably, psychopathology disorders are among the issues that affect most individuals on a global scale, therefore, by giving ideas on how it can be diagnosed and treated is among significance points that they have drawn.
