Physical fitness
Step 3: Prioritizing Issues to be dealt with, and finding smaller objectives
There is no urgent issue that would call for an emergency arrangement. The patient has, however, reported to have engaged into heavy abusive behavior since her children were taken away from her. She has also reported that she feels a lot of pain of losing her children. On the other hand, she had already developed a deteriorated relationship with her children before they were taken away. This clearly indicates Alice values her family s much, and that she is likely to go back into this abusive behavior if her children will be separated from her for a long time. It is also clear from this discussion that the presence of her children would make her feel relaxed, and hence provide a better environment for her to recover from drug and substance abuse. The first goal should hence address this problem.
Goal 1: Stable relationship with family; especially relationship with children.
Objective 1: Teaching Client about Family Ties
Procedure: Engage the client in fully interactive sessions about the importance of developing good relationships with ones children, spouse and the rest of the family. Client might watch family videos to learn more and start building a passion for a united family. This will help her learn to value and maintain a good relationship with her closest family members, especially her children and spouse. It is a necessary step so that if she ever gets reconciled with them, she will not assaulting or mishandling them again.
Homework: The client should list down fives ways of handling misunderstandings in the family. She should also give suggestions for handling her children as well as the rest of her family members. Lastly, she should make a commitment to building her familys unity and ensuring that they all live in happiness and love.
Length of time: 3 Days
As measured by: Attendance of sessions, commitment of the client to learn, ability to properly complete homework.
Objective 2: Bridging the gap between family and client
Procedure: Since the client has been separated from her children, it is important to try and reach them in order to notify them of their mums decision to change and completely leave this destructive behavior. The client is stressed by the fact that her children are not with her, and that they had already developed a poor relationship with her before they left. For that matter, she will feel relaxed when she knows that her children have been notified of her apologies and decision to change for the better. This will also play as a motivating factor since she will want to do her best in this program to recover her family, which she values highly.
Homework: The patient will write down the things that she wants to change about how she treats her children. She will also be expected to narrate the kind of life she wants to live with her children and family. Her narration will be recorded to form part of the treatment plan.
Length of time: 3 days
As measured by: Clients completion of homework
Goal 2: Preparation for treatment
Alice has never attended any treatment centre in the past. However, she tried attending AA/NA but could not succeed due to trauma that resulted from her childhood assault experience. There is hence a need to prepare her for this treatment program.
Objective 1: Prepare Alice for the treatment process
Procedure: The client will be taken through what it entails to get treated in the institute. She will be helped to review her own desire for treatment and taken through counseling in order t set her mind ready for treatment process.
Homework: Write down the major reasons that pushed her to seek for treatment. Narrate her desires and expectations in regards to this treatment process.
Length of time: 1 Day
As measured by: Completion of homework
Goal 3: Stability from alcohol and drug dependency
Once the client is assured that she will not completely lose her children, it will be easier to for her to settle down and face treatment. However, history has proven that the treatment process can be difficult for some patients, and hence there is always a need to try and awaken an intrinsic motivation from within the client.
Objective 1: Creating Motivation for Treatment.
Procedure: By this time, the client has already started the healing process. However, there is a need for her mind to be set in the right state that will allow her to stay focused until she is able to recover fully. To do this, it will be important to revisit and discuss her reasons for seeking treatment, and also talk about the negative effects that drug and substance abuse have caused in her life. Some of these effects include the loss of her loved ones such as her divorce and loss of her children to Child Welfare. This is necessary to help her understand her situation and hence focus on getting healed in order to live a normal life thereafter.
Homework: List the negative impacts that drug and substance abuse has caused her. Write down a positive desire that she would like to experience for each of these negative effects. Write down a vision statement that will guide her and help her stay focused through out the treatment plan.

Objective 3: Guidance and Counseling
Procedure: Client will attend a 2 hour session of guidance and counseling on drugs and substance abuse twice every week. She will also be required to attend another group session of guidance and counseling, where she will interact with other patients that are going through the same process of recovery. Individual counseling is vital to monitor her progress and help her cope up with her new life. On the other hand, group counseling helps her to understand that her problem is not unique and that there are also other people who have been struggling and are on their process to recovery. Since successfully recovered addicts will also be present in group counseling sessions, the clients motivation will be re-ignited by the desire to live a free life like those past addicts who have successfully recovered.
Length of time: 2 individual and 1 group counseling per week for 30 days.
As measured by: Successful completion and participation in both individual and group counseling sessions
Objective 4: Teaching new clients about alcohol and drug abuse
Procedure: During the last week of the treatment plan, Alice will be required to make a presentation to newly admitted clients. In her presentation, she will talk about her experience, if she feels comfortable about it, and teach them what she will have learned during her period at the institute. She will also tell them about her goals, and give them advice on how to remain focused and committed during the treatment plan. This serves as a way of motivating new clients, as well as helping Alice become responsible even as she prepares to finish her treatment.
Length of time: 45 minutes presentation, last week of her treatment
As measured by: Successful presentation
Goal 4: Dealing with family assault trauma
As recorded in the clients narration, she has tried to attend AA/NA but did not find help since she had not dealt with her past trauma. This clearly indicates that even if she completes this treatment program successfully, she might still fall back into drug abuse if her past trauma is not cleared. Consequently, there is a very high likelihood that current addiction is as a result of the trauma she experienced in the past.
Objective 1: Assault Counseling
Procedure: The client should be taken through a comprehensive counseling program to help her recover from her past assault trauma. This should be carried out by a counselor who is well versed in this area because it can be very sensitive and delicate to handle.
Length of time: 5 days
As measured by: Clients response to counseling
Goal 5: Dealing with self-esteem
It is clear that the clients self-esteem has been destroyed. First, it was affected by her childhood assault and with time, it has become very much destroyed that she has to sink into drug and substance abuse to find the boldness to face each day.
Procedure: Take the client through self-esteem counseling and repair process
Length of time: 4 days
As measured by: Clients response to counseling
Goal 6: Physical Fitness
One of the common causes of drug abuse is poor health. This is also evident in Alice, whose health has been badly affected. It is important, hence, to help her gain back her physical health even as she prepares to go back into the society and live a normal life, free from drugs.
Objective 1: Physical Health Assessment
Procedure: Conducting a physical health assessment of the client is necessary to determine the exact level of physical health damage that had occurred to her body system. This will help come up with an appropriate plan for the client that will help her recover back her physical health within a certain time. Her physical health will be assessed both clinically, and also by a physical health trainer. The results will guide the trainer in developing a custom plan for her recovery.
Length of time: 1 day
As measured by: Assessment results

A comprehensive and consistent physical training program will be developed, and the client will be expected to follow it as she continues adapting to exercising. She will then be placed on the right diet, which will be advised by a nutritionist in order to provide her body with the relevant nutrients for facilitating her full physical recovery. It is necessary to note that physical recovery may take a long time. However, this will only serve as a way of helping her to adapt to the training after which she will be expected to continue on her own.
Length of time: 14 days
As measured by: Clients response and adaptation to training
Goal 7: Gainful source of income
Experience shows that financial strain is a common cause of drug and substance abuse. It is hence necessary to deal with Alices financial problems so that they may not lead her back to alcohol and substance abuse. It is also clear that she needs money to take care of her family, as well as pay an attorney to help handle her pending cases on assault.
Procedure: Finding a gainful source of income may not be very easy, considering that Alice dropped out of school at...
