Tenured teachers, though they are the minority, earn the most whereas non-tenured teachers earn the least. The article proposes that the role of the university as the power house in knowledge production should be scrapped off. University administrators should focus more on education rather than such activities as establishing a state of the art research center. This is controversial, however as research improves education. The article also suggests that university budgets should be trimmed and course load reduced. The result of the tenure debate has led to wide disparities between colleges; the tenured being paid huge sums whereas their non-tenured counterparts walk home with peanuts.

Stevens is in support of protection of tenure in the education system. Some board members decision to remove teachers as disciplinary measure and penalty is based on flimsy reasons such as their child not getting a spot in the school team. Such are the reasons that make the need for tenure inevitable. Tenure is also needed to protect teachers from the threats of sacking by questioning the decisions of dictatorial administrators. The removal of tenure will leave many teachers vulnerable to mistreatment by overambitious administrators. The article argues that it takes dedicated teachers to wake up every day to come to teach students from diverse backgrounds, some of which are not so friendly. To this breed of teachers who are driven by a passion for the job, tenure is insignificant because they do it wholeheartedly, with no expectation of reward whatsoever.

Teacher tenure has its own pros and cons. The article argues that tenured professors tend to develop laxity tendencies as their jobs are guaranteed after all. In this way, tenure gives incompetent lecturers the leeway to instill knowledge to students at the expense of more qualified professors. It should, however, be noted that not all tenured professors abuse this privilege as some are driven by the passion for teaching and do a commendable job. On the flip side, ("Tenure") notes that tenure is good as it gives teachers security and enable them to focus on their core business. Overall, tenure should be reviewed, and renewable contracts should be initiated in place of tenure.

Locking of a teachers position is unjustified, as more qualified individuals can take over the post. It also leaves no room for competitiveness. Education is vital, and students should, therefore, be drink knowledge from the best teachers in the field. Tenured teachers who might be incompetent will keep instilling substandard knowledge to the students unless something is done. Tenure elimination implies that the administration will have a better grip on the teachers. If the administration cannot fire a teacher, why should they bother checking on their performance or attendance? Teacher tenure should be reviewed so as to allow room for competitiveness.
