A programming language is a constructed language or a formal language of a computer designed for communicating the instructions to the machine specifically the computer (Carbin, Misailovic & Rinard, 2016). Programming languages are used for the creation of the programs to express algorithms or control the computer behavior. The earliest known device that was programmable which preceded the digital computer invention is the automatic flute player produced in Baghdad by brothers Musa during the Islamic Golden Age (Ivory & Pulley, 2012). Since 1800, programs were designed to control the way the machines like player pianos and jacquard looms behaved. The essay, therefore, seeks to illustrate the examples of programming languages and the reasons why they are useful to programmers.
Java is an object-oriented language that uses a compiler and was released by Sun Microsystems in 1955. In the present world, it is the number one programming language for several reasons. First, it contains a library that is strong with reusable components of the software and is a well-organized language (Pulley, 2012). Secondly, the programs that are written in Java are capable of running on different machines and operating systems, and this is because they use JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Thirdly, Java language is the one most likely to be taught in the higher institutions of learning as many theory books of computer science written in the past make use of Java in the code examples. Jave is the most common language used by the programmers even though it is slower that the natively compiled languages.
Perl is a multi-paradigm language which is interpreted and written in 1986 by Larry Wall. It is characterized by scary-looking syntax which is disorganized and makes sense only to the PERL programmers (Ivory & Pulley, 2012). However, many veteran programmers are in love with it and use it as their primary language. Some ten years ago, Perl was more popular than it is today. The reason behind this is the fact that many programmers are making use of other languages such as Python, Ruby, and PHP. Perl is the best language for text processing and the scripting of the system administration with its only weakness being the strange syntax and the ways that it involves of doing the same thing always which makes it boring.
PHP makes use of the run-time interpreter and is the multi-paradigm language that was originally developed by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1996 to create web pages that are dynamic. When it was first made in use, it was not considered as a programming language but over time, it has grown eventually and has been a feature in an object-oriented programming language. In the past, PHP was criticized for being insecure and a bit sloppy, it has become pretty good after the release of version 5 in 2004 (Pulley, 2012). Presently, most web applications written make use of PHP language. Programmers like this language when it comes to web programming and the good documentation that it entails. Its only weakness is the weak syntax that it contains.
Programming languages have made the human life easier. The fact that at the click of a button, an individual can direct a machine to do many things at a faster rate has simplified things. The need for many persons at the workplace to performing same chores has been eliminated with the emergence of computer programming languages.
