When the society simply continues to ignore the fact that the mainstream of the energy sources today are exhausted and have looming shelf life, their diminishing effects will one time cause havoc and a major energy crisis. Therefore, people should venture to use sustainable energy sources. According to Dincer et al., sustainable energy is the type of energy that meets todays demands without getting depleted or expire and has minimal disadvantages to the environment (211). One of such sources of energy is the solar power. By converting the power of the sun into electricity, the energy of solar is green, clean, less expensive, and will never get depleted. Therefore, use of energy should shift to solar not because it is cheap but due to the fact that it is renewable and friendly to the environment which ensures environmental sustainability and is the choice for solving the current energy crisis.
Solar energy plays an imperative role in sustaining the environment since it is the most environmentally friendly and valuable form of energy. Particularly, it is the use of the radiant energy obtained from the sun. Notably, solar disinfection and distillation are among the common techniques employed to produce the portable water. Evidently, it also provides energy for drying, cooking, and pasteurization. According to Peng and KuiQing, it is the useful technique which ensures the quality of the environment is maintained by different mechanisms such as solar lightening, solar thermal, architecture and urban planning, and horticulture and agriculture (202). It provides several technologies for heat collection and generation, which proves it is significance in sustaining the environment. As such, just like other currently preferred forms of energy, solar energy has several applications and uses that should be employed.
There are several reasons why solar should be the most preferred source of energy. First, it is environmentally friendly and does not have serious harms to animals and plants on earth surface. Notably, fossil fuel and coal are the current majorly used forms of energy; however; according to Botkin et al., these source of energy have jeopardized the state of the environment through the production of greenhouse gasses that have destroyed the ozone layer (71). As a result, the human race is now contracting severe disease related to effects of global warming. On the same note, the lands that provide settlement for animals and plants have already been depleted leaving certain species to go to extinction. Conversely, the use solar energy as a renewable source improves the quality of life since it has no side effects as far as the environment is concerned.
Secondly, solar power is renewable. It is evident that the sun goes down at night, but is assured that it will come up the following day. This process continues as long as life remains, and that means with the use of solar energy, it is guaranteed that it will exist forever. According to Panwar, Kaushik, and Surendra, the renewable nature of the solar energy puts it ahead of other forms of energy (1519). Specifically, the crisis of fossil fuel and coal that the world is experiencing is as a result of their non-renewable nature. As a result, people will continue to look for fossil and degrade biosystem. This has been evidenced with some types of soil and lands that have been over-harvested until they are rendered useless. Mainly, the area that has been detached of all vivacity cannot restock itself sufficiently for any harvest.
Additionally, solar energy is less expensive as compared to the traditional methods. Notably, the issue of cost has created heated debates whether the solar energy is cheap or not. The opponents argue that installation of solar gadgets is very expensive and cannot be afforded by most countries, especially the developing nations. Moreover, the expensive solar panels are useless at night when the sun has come down. As much as the counter argument may appear correct, it is evident that solar energy is very cheap. This is because after installation, the solar energy is totally free and will serve people as much as they need it. On the same note, installation of the sizable solar panels ensures that solar energy is available even in the absence of the sunlight. Also, solar power production amenities can be installed at the clients site which minimizes the needed investments in transportation and production of infrastructure. As such, the opponents counter argument that the solar energy is more expensive than traditional sources hold no tangible evidence.
Moreover, the use solar energy will reduce the overdependence on the fossil fuel. A study conducted by Solangi et al. revealed that over-exploitation of the fossil fuel which has caused pollution of the environment is as a result of lack of substantial substitute (2150). Notably, the production of solar energy does not depend on the fossil fuel hence does not need this expensive and limited natural resource. Therefore, when put into usage, solar energy will reduce over depletion of fossil fuel. As such, it will ensure proper availability of fossil fuel which can then be used in countries at the polar that experience fewer hours of sunlight, and also assist in cases where solar energy fails.
Lastly, solar energy is available in most parts of the world as compared to traditional ones that are concerted in specific regions of the globe. Although the opponents of solar energy argue that its concentration cannot provide sufficient energy, proper installation of bigger solar panels and other gadgets ensures that it is sufficient for use (Panwar, Kaushik, & Surendra, 1520). For example, the intensity of sunlight is quite low in countries such as Germany; however, the technologies that have been used to harness this energy prove that it can be effective in most parts of the globe.
In conclusion, to ensure environment sustainability, renewable and sustainable sources of energy has to be used. One such energy sources that should be called into action is solar energy. Particularly, this form of energy is environmentally friendly and poses minimal adverse effects to both human beings and animals. Secondly, it is renewable hence will be in existence as long as people live. Moreover, it is less expensive as compared to the traditional sources. Lastly, it is readily available on a global scale and will reduce the overdependence on the fossil. As such, it is the best choice of energy source to ensure environmental sustainability.
