Series books are those literature story books that have got similar appealing factors such as familiar storylines, familiar writing styles and consistency of characters. The books are always ion a sequence with the same characteristics and are mostly grouped together. Series books can be organized in many ways such as being marketed by a single publisher or being written by the same author. It should, therefore, be noted that availability of series books can positively or negatively impact on childrens literature.
Children may develop a negative attitude in a particular author, and this will affect their reading and literature skills in all the works written by the author. This is always as a result of first the impression of the first book that the reader will read that was done by a particular author, may be it was boring or the book had some wrong usage of words (Gillespie, Mary 45). This always corrupts and interferes with the interest of children in literature works even if other books written by the same author would be very interesting, the first negative attitude created will make them have less interest in the same literature works.
Repetition and use of similar or familiar storylines also impact negatively in the childrens literature work as they may end up making prejudgments and false assumption on the themes and context of a particular story thinking that it is just the same story over and over again. This blocks their creativity and urges to learn new things. Therefore, children should be subjected to different books with different stories so that they can expound in all aspects and build interest in different literature works.
The consistency of characters in different stories read by children also is also another nightmare bin the field of literature. Children may read a particular story with very annoying characters that make the story very boring when the same child is given a different story with the same characters, he or she will automatically lack interest in reading the new story book following the previous disappointments in other characters in the previously read story book. Use of same characters also does not give children a chance to expound their reasoning based on different characters they could have interacted.
Common and familiar writing styles in the series books are greatly taking down literature work on our children. This is because they will always be used to a particular writing in all the stories they read in their daily lives, this may make them have no interest in any other literature work written in other styles (Gillespie, Mary 112). This makes our children unexposed and unidirectional, and therefore their creativity in the literature work may be poor as they had no chance to do adventure in different stories written differently with different formats.
Exposing children to all story books and novels from the same publisher also possess a great danger in their literature work as children mostly grow up with an idea of only one publisher and this makes them noninformed of other helpful books that are from different publishers that are also required their daily lives and literature work. The situation may arise where children get feed up with the same publication over and over again and to some extent may make them loose interest in literature.
A good example of children series books that reflects the above-discussed context are the Hurry Potter collection series for children, ages between 6 and 12,with t he titles; Harry Potter and the Sorcerers stones#1,Harry Potter: The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe ,Little House on the Prairie among other books in the series and context.
