It is not a secret that alcohol use is prevalent on college campuses. This insinuates that most underage students are involved in drinking sprees, which is illegal. Apparently, alcohol has become the drug of choice among minors. Reports indicate that whenever they are in their weakly parties, college students embark on drinking gallons of alcohol which is a risk to their health. Due to the detrimental impacts of drinking, underage drinking is considered to be a leading public health challenge in the country. According to reports published by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse, close to 5000 deaths of young persons under the age of 21 have been reported with the case of their deaths touted to be underage drinking. It is therefore imperative for credible institutions in the country to look for amicable solutions that will be integral in eliminating this scourge.

Teenagers are using drinking as a way of attesting their adulthood. It is revealed that teenagers drink for various reasons. Some drink in order to enhance their risk taking. Whenever they are drunk, teenagers are capable of seeking out actions that are considered risky and which cannot be done when they are sober. Expectations are also the reason behind drinking for the underage. Many teenagers hold fantasies that when they drink, they will pleasure themselves hence becoming happy. Peer pressure is also considered to be another driving force behind the escalating cases of drinking amongst teenagers. Most teenagers are hooked to alcoholism as well as the use of drugs, not because they like it but because their peers are also doing it. Initially it may have little impact but with tie, addiction may set in, making them to suffer from various complications that are associated with chronic drinking.

It is apparent that there is easy accessibility to alcoholic stuffs and other drugs by students in the colleges and universities. Drinking is not the only problem posed by teenagers, but also how they act after drinking. Once they are drunk, they become rowdy, destructive and they can end up causing harm to themselves and others. Statistics indicate that a teenager who drinks has higher chances of causing problems and havoc as compared to non-drinking teenagers (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism 2). This highlights how underage drinking is indeed a public problem.

Drinking and driving is also one of the problem associated with underage drinking. In America, majority of students own a personal car. They will be seen driving at their places of choice, especially to the parties. Such instances make them to drive while intoxicated with the effects of alcohol. In my experience, I had an accident last year. At around 11pm, I was going back home from the gym. While I was taking route I-20, the Ford Car that was coming from the opposite direction rammed into my car. After an accident, I tried to get their number and some information. I was angered to find out that they were 19 years old freshman college students. It is obvious that such incidents are common in United States. They loss control of themselves whenever they are drunk.

Drinking has a harmful effect to students as far as their academics are concerned. Scientists have pointed out that alcohol impairs some of the brain cells. Once brain cells have been impaired, it becomes hard for somebody to have normal brain development and growth. Learning being an element in the growth and development of ones brain is adversely affected. It follows that drinking makes the victims to have struggles in their learning process. Apart from impairing of brain cells, drinking also hinder growth and development of other body organs such as heart and liver. This implies that drinking will have the general detrimental implications on a teenager

Students are encouraged to adopt responsible behaviors. Their core responsibility should be about their studies. As parents ensure that their school expenses are catered for, they should also reciprocate this by being responsible in their studies. However, drinking and staying out late does can only yield irresponsible behaviors in them. It makes them to be unruly and vulnerable to hazards of the world. At the end of it all, such students may end up being the source of stress and problems, not only to their parents but also to the society at large.

It is crystal clear that underage drinking has myriad harmful and hazardous implications. Students as well as adults who are hooked to drinking ought to shun this vice. It is vital to acknowledge that alcohol only gives people short-term happiness and pleasure but end up having long-term implications on their lives. As a national problem, every citizen is requested to take an initiative of fighting against this scourge of underage drinking which is hampering growth and development of our nation.
