Eating food organically grown is a health boost for individuals. Benefits of eating healthy include fewer chances of developing Diabetes, heart-related disorders, high blood pressure. Healthy foods boost our immune systems where the body can be able to fight infections arising from bacteria and viruses. Farm foods contain low calorie and fat contents but with high protein and fibre ingredients. Food grown in local farms do taste better, always fresh and look lovely. For the Environment

Recent studies have shown that local foods have a smaller carbon footprint, and use of smaller farms is benefitting to the environment where on the other hand huge agricultural companies cultivate one type of crop on a large tract of land which is not good for the environment. They use concentrated pesticides and seeds improved through research. Smaller farms, in comparison, try various agricultural methods, for example, mixed farming where both methods depend on and benefit each other producing better food and animals. Local producers contribute to the growth of the local economy where the farmers generate revenues after marketing, transport and distribution. Those who support the development of a local food economy consider that since food is needed by everyone all over the world on each single day, a small difference in the way it is produced and marketed will have a significant effect on health, the environment, and preservation of cultural diversity. They say purchase decisions favoring local food consumption directly affect the well-being of people, improve local economies and may be more ecologically sound.

What Would Going Local Look Like In the Central Valley and Would It Be Feasible?

A feasibility study conducted in South Central by RSF Social Financing aimed at expanding and deepen the potential of regional food systems through the use of investments, loans, and grants. Sustainable Economies Law Centre received a grant from Seed Fund to support a new project that helps farmers who are interested in sustaining and growing their businesses through community-based or crowd-sourced financing methods.

South Central Famers have been cultivating in the Central Valley and are currently looking to expand and help start another worker owned farm. This came after South Central Farmers Cooperative, a worker-owned farm in the Central Valley were evicted in 2004 when the plot was set aside for development.

How Would Buying Local, seasonal, organic, and artisanal food affect the way you think about food, your lifestyle, eating and cooking habits, budget?

Food;

Purchasing whole foods remind me of flavor and freshness, characteristics that make food more enjoyable. Food should be tasteful and produced in such a way that they do not harm the environment, animal welfare or human health.

Lifestyle:

Leading a healthy lifestyle will require one to eat healthy encouraging eating more organic and local foods. An unhealthy lifestyle ignores such where one tends to focus on more high fat and calories carrying food for example, junks and take outs. Buying from the local market also supports your community and families who live in that community and rely on farming. Farmers that sell their goods at wholesale prices receive a payment thats often very close to the cost of production.

Eating:

Eating locally grown foods is the best way to lower your carbon footprint when it comes to what you eat. Agricultural products grown within ensures that food will be fresher and therefore taste better and perhaps retain more nutrients than food shipped across the globe.

Does healthy eating require three meals each day?

Cooking Habits:

The cooking habits can change in a case where an individual can challenge himself or herself to cook a meal with pure home-grown ingredients.

Chomp down on a raw carrot instead of boiling or sauteing it, and save energy that would otherwise have been used to power cooking appliances.

Budget:

One tends to think that buying organic food is more expensive than non-organic ones. Buying in bulk can provide great help in minimizing costs. Growing your vegetables in a garden is one of the best ways to include organic produce in your diet at a very low cost.

What would you give up?

I would give up unhealthy foods e.g. chocolate, pizza, French fries, etc. In addition to checking my portion size, the sugar and fat content in food must also be reduced significantly. This is because they create a lot of weight problems and energy spikes all of which have been linked to lifestyle diseases such as obesity which when aggravated may result in hypercholesterolemia and diabetes.

What would you refuse to Give Up?

Vegetables and fruits have a high nutritional value in addition to low calories. This is because they are rich in minerals, vitamins, fibre and antioxidants. Some of the must have foods in my diet include the kales and broccoli which have substantial amounts of minerals such as calcium and potassium needed for the development of bones. Sweet vegetables such as carts and sweet potatoes add sweetness to food and reduces cravings for added sugars. Fruits are also important in the diet because they possess antioxidants that fight diseases like cancer ("10 Healthy Eating Habits That Will Change Your Life").
