What comes to mind when you hear "employee relations"?

The mention of employee relations elicits the thoughts of the professional and personal relationships that exist among the employees of a given organization. These relationships are on a professional level when they are beneficial to the organization. However, they are personal when they are meant to benefit the individual employees who are the subject of the relations. Further, my mind thinks of that hidden relationship between one of the good looking employees and the manager. This relationship either leads to a promotion of that employee or to a favorable treatment. Moreover, upon hearing about employee relations, I think of those two employees who are in love and sometimes show it in the workplace.

How do you define employee relations?

My definition of employee relations can either be professional or personal. In this regard, they are the relationships which have negative or positive effects on the development of the organization. Further, employee relations can also mean the relationships between the juniors and the seniors of an organization. More specifically, it is the professional relationship between the employees and their managers at the top level. Further, it can be among the employee s and their supervisors. Moreover, the relationships can be between the employees themselves with their employers. In my thinking, the Human Resource Department is the organizations maintainer and enforcer of employee relations. As a result, a good teamwork generally leads to greater productivity. As such, employee relations are core to the success of an organization.

How do an organization's mission, vision, values, and culture influence its relationship with employees?

The mission and vision of an organization communicates its purpose for existence to the stakeholders as well as the general public. As such, the employees are made aware of the goals and objectives that they endeavor to achieve. In this regard, the mission, vision, and values provide the direction that the organization should take. Further, the vision statements are the focal points for the planning and strategizing of the organizations management. Employees are likely to work keeping in mind the mission of the company while focusing on its vision. Indeed, the values and culture influence, shape, and define the relationship that the employees have with an organization. Moreover, according to Wilkie (2013), the values define the kind of relationships that employees have among themselves.

In your experience in your current organization, or in another organization, what role do you most commonly see human resources take?

The HR department is without doubt one of the critical organs of my organization. In this regard, they are the determinants of the level of success of an entity. In this case, they provide the organization with the best innovative and creative minds through recruitment, promotion, and training (Wilkie, 2013). Indeed they are a strategic partner, since they recruit employees keeping in mind the strategic plan of the organization. In such a case, they can, therefore, play the role of strategists who foresee the future human resource needs of the organization and recruit employees who can satisfy those needs.

Why do you think that is its "default" role?

A default role refers to the function that every HR department in any organization has irrespective of its size ad capita pool. Specifically, the default role of any HR department is to recruit, promote, and train employees. Additionally it can also be to take disciplinary actions against the errant employees. In this regard, human resources can even dismiss any employee who they deem a liability to the organization.
